Richard W. Wahl

Richard W. Wahl, 89, of Salina, Kansas, died May 21, 2012 at Salina Regional Health Center.  He was born in Saxman, Kansas on January 26, 1923, the youngest of eight surviving children of August and Olga Wahl, German immigrants from the area on the Baltic Coast then known as East Prussia.  He attended public schools in Saxman and Lyons, Kansas, graduating from Lyons High School in 1940.  He briefly attended the University of Kansas before enlisting in the United States Army in 1943, serving in medical units in Ireland, England and France during World War II and in Germany immediately following the war.  He was discharged in 1946 and returned to the University of Kansas, graduating in 1949 with a degree in business and in 1951 from the University of Kansas School of Law.  After graduation, he moved to Lincoln, Kansas and established a solo law practice that he maintained until 1975 when he was appointed Chief Judge of the 12th Judicial District of Kansas.  He retired in 1989 but continued to sit by appointment.  He was later appointed a Senior Judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals and served until a few years before his death.

In 1954, Richard married Harriet McGuire, originally of Decatur, Georgia, and they raised three sons in Lincoln.  In 1981, he and Harriet moved to Concordia, Kansas, where they lived until Harriet died in 2004.  He moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 2005 and to Salina in 2011.  He was predeceased by his wife, parents and siblings.  He was survived by his sons, Phillip, his wife, Leslie, and daughters Natalie and Georgia; Douglas; and Donald, his partner, Sean O'Hogan, and children Axel, Cris and Seni.

Richard lived honorably, unselfishly, and with humor, consistently doing the right things for the right reasons.  He was among the very best of us.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lincoln United Methodist Church, Lincoln, Kansas, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Concordia or Camp Concordia POW in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home 500 S. Ohio, Salina, Ks 67401.

I am a retired Salina lawyer from the Clark, Mize & Linvile firm. Judge Wahl was my all time favorite judge. I tried several cases before him, some complex and some not so complex. He never had any trouble figuring out the complex ones. I always found him to be fair. He was a no nonsense judge which I really appreciated. We sat together at Bill Buechel's funeral a few years ago after I was retired. It was very interesting to visit with him outside the courtroom and about things other than legal matters. I cannot believe he is gone and I will miss him very much, as will his family.

To the family of Richard W. Wahl I was Clerk of the District Court for Judge Wahl for many years in Mankato, KS. He was always so nice to me and helped me through a couple of family crisis's. About the time there was a judge killed in CO, he told me not to climb under my desk because he was going to go there first. With sincere sympathy, Joan Rehmert

Richard was the last of my uncles. He and my father were both attorneys--my father Edward practiced law in Lyons, KS, until he was 80 years old. Being an attorney must be good for longevity. Richard was quite helpful when my father and mother passed away, and I will always be in his debt for that service. I regret I will be unable to attend his memorial service, but I will be there in spirit. I extend my sympathy to his family and will make a memorial contribution. Robert W. Wahl, MD

I was honored to have served on the board of the Cloud County Historical Society when Judge Wahl was president. He was such a kind, fair-minded man. He brought dignity to our board. He always told me to call him Richard, but I never could call him anything but Judge Wahl. I had so much respect for him. He was a truly great man who is missed.

As a Salina lawyer, I tried an extremely demanding case to a jury in a week long trial over which Judge Wahl presided. He became my favorite trial judge because of his fair but no nonsense approach. After I became his judicial colleague, my wife Barbara (of Wiesbaden, Germany)and I spent many delightful social hours with Richard. We all shared fond memories of Wiesbaden. Barbara and I were privileged to call him our good friend.

Doug, Phil, and Don. I often remember our days in Lincoln County and the "wild" areas of Saxman KS where your dad would take us on weekends. Bird hunting, fishing on the Saxman river, or spending an evening preparing tacos in your family kitchen, Judge Wahl always had a willingness to listen and the skills to nudge us in the right direction. Your father will be missed - an inspiration to me and many others. The many great memories of our youth together will be with me always. Thanks to Judge Wahl and Doug, Phil and Don for including me in so many great adventures.

To Phil and the Wahl family. May I offer my sincere sympathy in the death of your father. It had been many years since I had seen your dad but I have many years of memories of our lives while growing up in Lincoln..... School, the Presbyterian Church and as our neighbors at the top of the hill. Know that my thoughts are with you in this time of sorrow and loss.

We were very sad to learn of your fathers passing. We have very fond memories of your parents. Richard was a great help when Don's father passed away. Our children, Royce, Linda and Mona send their sympathy also. We will be unable to attend the services as we are going to Royce's in Clearwater to celebrate Fathers Day and a granddaughter's birthday. Our thoughts have been with you all since learning of his death.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I knew Richard (Judge Wahl to me) not only from going to school in Lincoln, but also when I was able to do my court reporter internship hours with him and his reporter. I learned so much from him and have the utmost respect for how he conducted his courtroom and performed his job. I know he will be missed by his family and friends, but also he will be missed in the legal community. I hope good memories comfort you. Tammy (Little) Hogsett
