Elmer M. Hammerschmidt, 84, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2015. Elmer was born in Ogallah, Kansas on September 28, 1930, a son of the late Anna (Sander) and Mike Jacob Hammerschmidt. He was married to the late Dorothy Hammerschmidt, they were both members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Elmer was member of the Machinist Union 101. He enjoyed his work, especially moving dirt with his D-8 Caterpillar. He was a heavy equipment operator much of his life. He had a business in the oil field and soil conservation. His work took him as far as Pennsylvania and Idaho, as well as Louisiana and Texas. But, his favorite jobs were the ones close to home, so he could be home every night. He mostly lived for his beloved wife and children. He loved playing with his grandchildren. They always put a smile on his face. Elmer would always lend a helping hand or a dollar or two when needed. Elmer was just a 'Good Ol' Boy' who enjoyed life and the people around him. P.S. He never went anywhere without his brown Stetson cowboy hat. Survivors include daughter, Linda Kendrick, and husband Marshall, of Newton, Kansas; sons, Larry Hammerschmidt and wife Cathy, of Smolan, Kansas, David Hammerschmidt and wife Tammy, of Niles, Kansas; sisters, Viola Robin, of Walker, Kansas, Elias Hammerschmidt, of Kingman, Kansas; grandchildren; Terry and Eric Kendrick, Crystal and Brad Hammerschmidt, Great-grandchildren, Tegan, Eason and Addison Kendrick. Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy Hammerschmidt, and brothers, Richard , Norbert, Alvin, and Fridolin Hammerschmidt ; sisters, Silvina Pfaff, Helen Mohl, Mary Weigel, Irene Pfannenstiel, Sr. Armella Hammerschmidt CSA. Visitation will be held Monday, March 2, 2015 from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm at the Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 6:30 PM and the family will be present from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salina, Kansas, with Fr. Barry Brinkman officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Salina, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Disease & Related Disorders- Topeka Chapter, in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, Kansas 67401.
