Peggy Joan North, of Salina, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012. Ms. North was born in Oberlin, Kansas, the daughter of William Miller and Lillian Lemman. She resided there until attending college at Colby Community College and Fort Hays State College, earning her bachelor's degree in English in 1971. Work experience started early for Ms. North, as she joined her family at age 7, shucking corn for local farmers and caring for her siblings. Later restaurant work included dishwashing and waiting tables. Then working a library during college. After graduating from college Ms. North taught at Claflin High School, Claflin, Kansas in 1972 and 1973. Moving to Salina in 1974, she began teaching as a substitute in U.S.D. 305. She was hired to teach at Salina High School South in 1975 and continued for 32 years until retiring in 2006. Besides teaching, she loved spending time with friends, family, and visiting with former students. She also enjoyed arts, crafts, sewing, cooking, stained glass, silkflower arranging and baking for friends and family. She was an active member of the KNEA for 32 years and longtime member of Zeta Lambda of the philanthropic organization, Epsilon Sigma Alpha. While working at the Fort Hays State Library in 1969, Peggy met the love of her life, Marvin C. North. They were married June 2, 1973 in Oberlin Kansas. From that union two children were born Aaron Wesley in 1976 and Sarah Liane in 1978. Marvin preceded her in death on January 31, 1979. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Sarah North, of Salina; son, Aaron North, of Wichita, Kansas; step daughters, Rebecca Hudson, of McPherson, Kansas and Cynthia North, of Hamilton, New Jersey; sisters, Lou Kersenbrock, of Colby, Kansas, Waunita Stoney, of Oberlin, Kansas, Pat Gustus, of Geneseo, Kamsas, and Fern Mosier, of Oberlin, Kansas; as well as seve grandchildren. She is also survived by 7 Grandchildren. Her parents, stepfather William Mosier, grandparents, husband, sister Henrietta Irene Dye, and an unnamed brother also preceded Ms. North in death. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wedneday, May 2, 2012 at First Covenant Church, with Reverend Doug McHenry officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Peggy's name to the Salina Education Foundation, 1511 Gypsum, Salina, Kansas. 67401.
