Russ graduated from Salina High School. He joined the US Navy in 1973 serving his country for 6 years. Russ loved being a Sonar Technitcian Surface (STG) on board the USS Conyngham DDG-17 and went by his moniker "Sub Hunter".

Mr. Unselt retired in November 2024 after many years working at Grain Belt Supply Co. in Salina, Kansas.

Cremation took place in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home.

Russ was a devoted uncle and the kind of person his family could always count on. When someone needed him, he was there. He enjoyed the simple things in life, especially going to the movies, finding the best places in town to eat, and keeping up with the latest Marvel films. More than anything, Russ valued the people in his life and the time he was able to spend with them.

To his nieces and nephews, Russ was more than an uncle. He was a constant presence in their lives someone they knew they could turn to and someone who showed his love by simply being there. His kindness, dependability, and the memories made over countless meals, movies, and time spent together will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
